Scholarships

Background

 

Prior to the start of the coronavirus, school dropout rates in Bangladesh were close to 39%. This rate has decreased from 60% within the past 30 years, which is incredibly slow progress. Due to the pandemic, the rate of dropouts has shot back up to 45% (many dropouts have not been recorded, so in reality, the number is much higher).

The inevitable fate of school dropouts is early child labor. They have no option but to sacrifice their safety and well-being in order to provide for their families in dangerous work environments.

What we have done

 

We provide scholarships opportunistically to students from our own observations, those recognized by their schools, and those that reach out to us on their own for help. We select  students after looking over their school board results, their economic situation, their motivation, as well as their aspirations for the future. The scholarship is given to them in exchange for their guarentee to spend the money towards improving their education and their promise to maintain their grades to the best of their abilities. After giving them their scholarships, we keep tabs on them by conducting checkups each semester to ensure that they're on the right track.
